Mirrored Coding in Transition

Description

March 2015
Media: Ink, watercolor, thread, plastic, and netting on canvas.
Part of my structural identities concentration: Testosterone (blue stitching) and Estrogen (pink stitching)

Symbolism behind this piece: This is a dual self portrait. The top left is me as of now. The bottom right is me, circa 2011-12. When I transitioned from female to male, I had a little shame and doubt in myself for transitioning and had thoughts that I was indeed "leaving myself behind", but really-- Nothing is left behind. Our coding remains the same (hence the DNA). One's body chemistry may change if we chose to medically transition (estrogen to testosterone for me). But yet, nothing is still left behind. It's just a mirrored world where one can be happier as they are after transitioning to their preferred identity!

Other symbols:
-The mirrors show my discomfort in seeing myself as I didn't want to be in my female identity. And on the other hand, comfort in finally seeing myself as I am now in -my male identity.
-The stitched X shapes in DNA represent the stitches from top/chest surgery.
-The pink/white/blue color scheme is prominent in the transgender pride flag.
-White shirt indicates a feeling of "purity" and "freshness" in my current identity.

It reminds me of the I Ching. I believe that we are all connected and, like every element and the universe itself, are always subject to changes. Like the river is not the same as it was yesterday, we're never the same person we were an hour ago. We are even different persons at the same time. And we are all seaching for the one and true condition of our selves. I'm curious how this subject will develop, grow and change in your works.
